Missing BoaterEd

I will be honest and had an anchor for many years. I didn’t want to renew because I afraid the site wasn’t going to last very long with the loss of traffic, the slowness, the hackers or whatever that was for a while, no store front, and other issues. If back to where it was it would have my money again.

Here is my take, if you come here, you read stuff and your happy to visit, then pay up.
If you think site is slow, no storefront, too many hackers, then go elsewhere.
This is a member driven site and we don't need members that think they are entitled to come here and bitch and not pay.
We have enough of those in this country!

Not renewing because of a "fear that the site wasn't going to last very long" is kind of a self fulfilling prophecy isn't it? If more of us with anchors shared that thought, it wouldn't last very long. Amazing how many excuses one can come up with for not renewing

Lots of good points are being made here. I'll admit I haven't been able to contribute much if anything lately. I don't find this site to be slow and many sites have hack attacks. This was and is a great site in my opinion. I have met many people from this site in real life that I consider to be friends and knowledgeable.

+ 1 on the anchor. $20 bucks a year...give me a break.

Ever notice that the guy's that complain how slow it is, don't have anchors.
Perhaps if you supported the site we could get some faster and better equipment!

Try to comprehend the difference between a question and a complaint.

I was on this site when you were computing in LOTUS.

No offense, but don't see a question, I see a comment from you and the comment points to the slowness. I also don't see a anchor. So I don't think I was out of line with my comment back and I was not directing it at you but just the general theme. I personally don't think the speed of the site is the issue. I do think if more people anchored up and become more actively involved and promoted the site to new boaters and friends it would be better.

"I do think if more people anchored up and become more actively involved and promoted the site to new boaters and friends it would be better."

Agreed.

Boatfix was the best thing that happened to my boat wallet ...ever.. and it is gone.

Over the years I think that the natural rise and fall of organizations had an impact and I think that Les took his foot off the gas pedal.

Well perhaps it's time Les hand the site off to someone who can grow it.
I would love to see my son or some other millenial take it by the horns and run with it.
Odd are pretty slim that will happen.

Maybe merge this site with another site that sells boating supplies and offers a discount to boatered members who anchor up!
I still buy 90% of my boating supplies online.

I think your ideas are good ones. And potentialy very helpful if implemented in some form.

Contrary to what some in NBR may think.

I thought that was the reason for all the advertising on the home page.......was to offset the expense of running the site.

Or is that not enough ???

This topic was beaten to death a while back and nothing has changed.

Here is my take for what it is worth.

1. I don't want to see ads for Petco or Green Mountain coffeee. I would rather see marine related ads.

2. It is silly that you can't join if you have a free email account. The world revolves around gmail.

3. I have talked to people who could not register a while ago. I sent an email to Les. crickets chirping

4. I am a part-time broker and not only can't I list anything here, I can't even say I am a broker because it is "too commercial".

I have been a paying RO since 2002 but I have not renewed.

I too have been a member since Nov 2002...and have not renewed for the past 2 cycles. I no longer see the " need " for NBR and its politics. Very rarely do I click on anything other then ATC and LICC anymore. I'm Moderator of the Sea Ray owners folder and had sent numerous emails to Les to please select someone else to moderate since I'm no longer interested and had sold my Sea Ray over 5 years ago........CRICKETS CHIRPING.

If guess are not welcome here then why are we able to see / read and post here ? Looks to me as when this was set up the host meant it for ALL. You guys decided to be groupies and stick together and shun all others.
Anyone new coming here and reading for a few weeks sure as heck will stay away. Step out of the box guys and look back in.
The site is SLOW. The site is slow because of the ads. The ads are there to generate money. Which totals to a hell of a lot more than your $20…
At the time of this posting, Active Members : 9 , Guest : 88 On line. Lol.. Are the 9 of you having fun yet ?
Maybe this site is not about boating, making new friends, helping others with problems. It’s about hey guys look at me, I can afford $20. Me and 8 of my buddies are here now.
So now, come on, let’s see 20 + posts on this, your all good at that.
Have a great day on the water EVERYONE.

For those that say this site is slow. What kind of internet connection do you have? It never takes longer than one or two seconds to load for me. That includes at work, at home or 4g on phone.

I never find the site to be slow and never see the ads. Ad Blocker Plus works for me.

I still plan on supporting the site. Still lots of good reading and great useful info on here. What is sad is to see past supporting ROs knocking the site. If your that dissatisfied move on. No need to knock it.

The adds on this site are less invasive than most sites. That, and the gifs associated with the ID are small and inconsequential compared to other sites that have you load a whole photo. One site in particular is so loaded with personal photos and adds in threads it's difficult to read. If you think this site is slow, it's because the screen isn't hopping around with dynamically built pages that are flooded with adds.

Network traffic gets the best of any site once in a while.

As far as the ads go. Yesterday I sent an e-mail quote to another electrician for a lighting job at a local Toyota dealer. The dealers name was in the subject box. Later in the day I opened BE and an ad for that Toyota dealer popped up.

Beware big brother is watching.

Yes I've noticed the same thing Seams like any commercial site u visit pops up here .
