Rogue Wave question

Here is a good document about WiFi roaming and other mechanisms that allow clients to negotiate a network connection and keep the connection.
http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1011/1011.1956.pdf
This document doesn't address HetNet 2.XX. Currently "wave 2" or the 2nd revision for AP's and clients is being deployed.

The latest Rogue Firmware for older models is 7.51 as of 6/4/15. There are some reports from users that the flash process to update to this version may fail and the units will have to be re-flashed from a command prompt on Windows. I'm going to update to 7.51 on both my Rogues this weekend (one is running 7.37 and the other 7.01).

Newer BGN models are currently shipping with 7.54.

Kurt are you using TFTP to upgrade the software on the Wave WiFi devices?
I don't have remote access to my server but I know when I flashed Wave devices it was done via TFTP not a Windozzzz based program.

Also, when I click on "live weather" nothing happens

Richard wants me to try it via the Rogue's GUI. If that fails it'll have to be via TFTP to factory reset it.

Mike, you must have a newer BGN model. They ship with 7.54. My older models are stuck on 7.51 as the latest.

The sad thing is that in my travels I've never found that any network I can connect to is decent enough that I can deal with it. I almost always end up using Verizon LTE as it's faster. At my own slip I plaster my boat with Wi-Fi so I don't need an external antenna. You people "up north" are fortunate to have good networks to connect to. The ones in MD and FL I've experienced suck (or they have too many people streaming NetFlix on them, which the likely scenario).

It's because we pay outrageous slip fees

The newer ROGUE units use the latest chipset that does quasi N combining both streams into one antenna. I have been testing the dual antenna stream N MIMO version (2X2) it's really nice. I use the V-pole and H-pole dual polarity antenna.

True. I forgot about that $5/ft thing you've got going on in NY. I see $2.50 and think I'm being ripped off. We may head to Worton Creek this weekend and pay $1.50/ft. Alas, there will be no Wi-Fi and not even any cell phone coverage. At least I have my satellite phone! :-)

Mike, if you can't bring up the weather tab the ROGUE is not connected to the Internet.
Something's amiss with your set up.
I assume your devices (smartphones/ laptops/ external switch-router) are pointed at the ROGUE and not Optima while on the boat with the ROGUE turned on?
How close is the OPTIMA access point to your vessel?
There is a known issue with the ROGUE operating in a non-linear fashion when too close to any access point with that access point being selected.
Bill

Mike earlier you mentioned a router, are you using a router now to rebroadcast the Rogue? If so I know a quick easy fix.
Let me know what the physical layout and connection between the Rogue and router.

Billy there are at least three hotspots in close range to Mike's boat I used my laptop when testing it but he had no issue logging into his router when we where finished. If he needs I will stop by and check it out. I setup two systems the same weekend I know the second one is working well and streaming Netflix without an issue!

Well the ROGUE doesn't play well when plugged into an external router/AP (aka the Internet connection). This may sound silly but unplug the CAT5 from the ROGUE to the Internet connection on the Router. Unplug the Router CAT5 plug and re-install the CAT5 to any of the "Router's" wired ports be it LAN 1-4. This bypasses the Router Internet port and will be connected to the switch portion of the external router and it should properly perform. Most external router's have 3 parts, the router/ Firewall, a 4 port LAN switch (in a standard home router) an access point (WLAN).
One other point some routers play well with the ROGUE most have problems properly communicating between the two devices.

Rather than start a new thread...I am installing the rogue this afternoon. For today I will most likely use the rail mount that comes with the unit. However, I have a nice spot on the radar arch (where the old TV antenna was). If I do this, I will need a cable from the antenna to the rogue unit...I will try to keep this cable run as short as possible and put the rogue unit in the arch.

What connector does the antenna use? Is it PL-239? I will need to order the appropriate extension cable when I figure out where the unit fits.

The ROGUE has a male "N" connector on it. I'd recommend keeping any external coaxial (50 ohm) as short as possible. Never under any circumstances use a PL-259 connector, their maximum usable frequency is + or - 450MHz. WiFi is near 2.4GHz hence the need for using N connectors. The coaxial assembly should be TIMES Microwave LMR400 or equiv. The external cable will need one female N (mates with the ROGUE) and one male N connector (mates with a WiFi Omni antenna). In WiFi congested areas it's sometimes better to mount the antenna lower to minimize the number of AP's seen by the ROGUE.
I generally recommend that the WiFi antenna be mounted free & clear of obstructions so it goes on the arch or a hardtop.

Thanks Bill, I hope to have more information tomorrow in regards to the length of cable I will need. I imagine I would want a right angle connector on one end.
I have a new rogue wave, netgear wireless router, amazon firestick and 15yr old kid ready to install this afternoon! My daughter is amazing with this stuff...she will figure it out!

Walshie, my Rogue has an Ethernet cable that runs to it, not coax

Mike, Walshie is talking about separating the ROGUE from the external antenna.
I like the set up I supplied Dave (AudreyII) for a hardtop or arch installation.
It required a custom machined Aluminum adapter made by BitStorm. It replaces the plastic
bottom (Ethernet cable) side and adapts the ROGUE main body ("aka" a highly modified Ubiquiti Bullet) to a standard marine
antenna thread.

I use the Ubiquity Bullet with an 8DB omni with LMR400 about 6 feet long and we are very happy with it. This set up has the UBQ ethernet'd to the internet port on the netgear that rebroadcasts for devices on the boat. The UBQ port forwwards to the NG, and both are on separate subnets within 192.168. It works like a charm and with port forwarding on the NG I can view the webcams on the boat.
I will say when I enabled SSH so I could Putty to the UBQ, the hackers showed up with incrementing IDs and passwords so I had to shut that down.
