Spring Boaters Fling

Thanks for the input on entering fourteen mile slough!!! I have been to Moores before.. I have dropped my boat off there so Wes (I think that is his name) from Delta Boat works could do some work on Grattitude. I dont like accessing the main channel of the San Joaquin there cause I find that the channel is way too narrow on the down stream side (I have gone aground there) and I dont know the way on the other side. So I usually use connection slough.
 
Greg, this might be a good chance to learn from those who know that section better! I usually cut across the berm [not at low tide] and enter the SJC on the upstream side. The water is about 25 deep if you stay in the deep water. Go with someone who has local knowledge and track it on your GPS/chartplotter for future reference!

If we eat around 5:30-6PM, we will still have daylight on the docks....

Rubyray: go to Google maps and put in this search: motel loc: 6649 Embarcadero Dr, Stockton, CA 95219 (Village West Marina)

You will see several motels in the vicinity. Also, call VWM and ask them about lodging in the area.

I'm berthed at Riverboat and travel that area frequently. When I leave the slip, I hug the reeds to the south of the restaurant since there's a shoal straight out from the docks. There is also a deeper area north of the docks that leads back to Wes's Delta Boat Works shop. It may not be an issue for some, but at low tide I've kicked up some mud opposite the docks.

After entering the Moke, stay on the west channel, mid channel until past Korth's and under the tall powerlines. Ahead to the left is a small tule island with a small beach area on the north side. It's the island SSW of Koth's on the map. The coordinates of the 'beach island' from Google Earth are 38° 05'44.63"N 121°34'15.58"W. I pass between the tule islands by keeping beach island to starboard and passing equidistant between the tules. Last year there was a snag just NE of the halfway point between the islands, so be careful. At low tide, I've seen 4 feet under my hull while crossing there and I draw 3.5 feet. Needless to say, I always go slow and kick it into neutral as I coast over the shallowest point, just in case.

After you enter pass through the tules, favor the left shore since there's a shoal to starboard. Keep an eye on your chartplotter...it should be depicted. Pass to the left of light 49 and enter the main channel of the SJ.

I like 6PM dinner as long as it gives everyone ample time to get there and prepare. Anyone need a later dinner time than 6PM?

We're probably going to be arriving too late to participate in the Pot Luck, but we plan on arriving Friday night so cocktails aren't out of the question. There is a chance that I'll be bringing the boat down myself Friday late morning if you'd like a ride Al. If I pull that off, I'll make something for the pot luck, just not sure what.

Jim,

Low tide at Prisoner's Point is 2PM on Fri, so departure after then will give some help from the tides and less chop in case the winds kick up. I'm up for the trip if my ride is going then. Should know more tonight.
 
What time is dinner on Saturday?

Gas was $2.59 a gallon at Village West when I filled up today. There were some boats at the dock:

Sounds like perfect weather and a good time to start the boating season!! I'm heading down today (wed) and getting things ready. My brother might come down thursday late so we might just head over early on friday to help "secure" the area. If I do that, we will not make the "convoy" from Moores - I will know tomorrow and let people know.

Al - if you don't hook up with Dave, you can go with us. This is a guys only cruise, no wives or kids, so there is lots of room if you want to stay on the boat as well. If you don't mind sleeping on a sofa bed, a lot of heated political discussions, a few stinky cigars, and (possibly) too much tequila, you can stay with us. The boat is pretty respectably and clean, for an old girl! I could use some extra "experience" since I think my chart plotter is down... Call me and let me know - my internet is iffy on the boat.
 
I should be able to stop by Village west tomorrow to touch bases with them, and to make sure we can get the spot that I think will work for us. If they let me I will tape off the area tomorrow, if not I am planning on getting there about 11:00am Friday. I will let you know tomorrow night.

I'm on jury duty this week (hey ... I look at it as a 3 week paying job) so my schedule is all messed up. I've now gotta take care of a bunch of stuff on Friday, so I'll be there on Saturday for the day. Because of the distance & only being able to stay for the day, I'll be coming by car (rats!!)[:-cry]

I would like to suggest that we all monitor VHF as we come up 14 Mile Slu and prepare to dock.

Hopefully someone can be on the dock with a HandHeld giving us docking instructions!

Shall we agree on Ch 71? Hail "BoaterEd Offenders at Village West Marina" for docking instructions.

I'd like to request that GrAttitude and I be docked next to each other since Greg only knows me. I can keep an eye on him and out of trouble!!! LOL
 
We should have GrAttitude sufficiently tainted by the time we all arrive on Friday. You might not want to dock next to bean-boy.

Ch 71 and a dock-god(dess) sounds like a great idea. Are you volunteering, Liz? BTW, I used to be an air traffic controller in the 1980s. I'm trained at telling people where to go. But I'm no good at it after a few beers. DAMHIK
 
Sounds like it will be every one for them selves... LOL I will keep my flares handy to signal the harbormaster that I need a life ring tossed in my direction. But then with all the natural gas I may not need suplemental flotation...

Hi all. I'm on my boat now and the weather is not bad - it was a little cool and breezy last night - sweater weather, but should be better by fri and saturday - see, it pay's to pray! Right now the sun is bright with a 5-8 mph breeze and its getting warmer by the minute.

Bill, I couldn't find the old placque - I think in my last garage clean in ended up in a box in my barn but it was way too cold to dig out! I will find it next time. Sorry...

Bill Wells is a writer for the Yachtsman and in our Castaways yacht club. I told him about our meeting last night and he is going to try to come by and take some photos - we might be published! FYI, last year a group of us at Oxbow started a club (the Castaways Yacht Club) on the premise of truly having fun with the only real rule being have fun. None of the politics and rules of some clubs, really an informal bunch of boaters just having fun. We have 60 boats in the club and cut off the admission as it was getting too big. We are not PICYA, just a bunch of friends boating together - kinda cool - kinda like us...

I want to say a special THANKS to Bill for getting this thing officially started - this might be the most-read-and-responded-to thread on Boaters Ed!! I'm proud to be a part of such a great bunch of real boaters! (I just hope we don't have any bean-related explosions on the dock!)

I stopped by the marina at noon today, and they said there would be no problem for us tomorrow. It was a bit windy out there, white caps on 14 mile slough. I seen the news this morning, and they are predicting that it will die down by the weekend. I am planning on getting there around 11am and tape it off, then I might shot out on the river maybe up to Mandeville and back. Got to burn some of that old gas. Will be on 71.
 
My brother is comming down to the boat tonight, so we are going to leave early in the morning to miss the wind, I hope. That means we will NOT be cruising from Moores at 2:00 - hopefully we will be cofortably numb at Village West by then!

I'm changing my food a bit - still potatoes -but better. A fello berther here at Oxbow just opened a grocery store right downtown in Reo Vista and has a deli. I bought some of his potato conconction for dinner last night and they are great - has skins beat big time. Anyway I'm going to help support him and buy a big batch, BUT it has NOTHING to do with it being easier... right?
